Same-Day Emergency Dental Care in Lakeview, New Orleans

Severe toothaches, broken teeth, and knocked-out teeth cannot wait. Dr. Ponder-Memory offers same-day emergency appointments to get you out of pain fast.

Oral cancer is one of the most survivable cancers when caught early, yet it remains one of the most underdiagnosed. The challenge is straightforward: symptoms in the earliest stages are easy to overlook and, more often than not, painless. A sore that lingers, a patch of unusual tissue, or a subtle change in how your mouth feels can each be the earliest warning sign of something serious. By the time many patients notice a problem on their own, the disease has often progressed beyond the stage where treatment is simplest.

That is precisely why routine oral cancer screenings matter so much, and why they are built into every comprehensive exam at our preventive dentistry practice. At Ponder Memory Family Dental, Dr. Ponder brings over 10 years of general dentistry experience and extensive training through her hospital-based general practice residency to every patient visit. We believe that the best dental care is proactive, not reactive, and oral cancer screening is a clear expression of that philosophy.

What Oral Cancer Screening Involves

Screening for oral cancer is a fast, noninvasive process that takes place during your regular dental visit. It requires no special preparation and causes no discomfort. Dr. Ponder carefully examines the soft tissues of the mouth, including the tongue, cheeks, gums, floor of the mouth, palate, and throat, looking for any abnormalities that warrant a closer look.

The screening involves both a visual examination and a physical one. Visually, Dr. Ponder looks for irregularities in color, texture, and symmetry. During the physical component, she gently palpates the neck, jaw, and mouth tissues to identify any lumps, thickening, or swelling that may not be visible. Together, these steps form a thorough picture of your oral tissues in just a few minutes.

What We Are Looking For

Not every unusual finding in the mouth is cause for alarm, but each deserves attention. During your screening, we look for the following signs and indicators:

  • Red or white patches: Unexplained areas of redness or white tissue, known as erythroplakia and leukoplakia, respectively, can sometimes signal precancerous changes.
  • Persistent sores: Any sore in the mouth or on the lips that has not healed within two weeks is worth examining.
  • Unusual lumps or thickening: Changes in the texture of oral tissues, including firmness or swelling, may indicate an area that needs further evaluation.
  • Numbness or pain without a clear cause: Unexplained discomfort, tenderness, or a feeling of something caught in the throat can be early symptoms.
  • Difficulty chewing or swallowing: Changes in how the mouth functions can sometimes point to deeper tissue changes.

None of these findings automatically means cancer is present. They are simply the signals we are trained to investigate. When something stands out, we discuss it with you openly and refer you to an appropriate specialist if further evaluation is needed.

Who Should Be Screened and How Often

The short answer is everyone, regardless of age or perceived risk. Oral cancer screenings are a standard part of the dental cleanings and exams we perform, so if you are already coming in for your routine visits, you are already being screened.

That said, certain factors do raise a patient’s risk profile. Tobacco use in any form, including cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and chewing tobacco, is among the most significant risk factors for oral cancer. Heavy alcohol consumption, prolonged sun exposure to the lips, a history of HPV, and prior oral cancer diagnoses also increase risk. Patients with any of these factors should be especially consistent about keeping their preventive dental appointments.

According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, the five-year survival rate for oral cavity and pharyngeal cancers is significantly higher when the disease is detected at a localized stage compared to later stages. Routine screening is the mechanism that makes early detection possible.

The Connection Between Oral Health and Overall Health

The mouth is a window into the broader health of the body. Conditions ranging from gum disease to oral cancer can have systemic implications if left untreated. This is one reason we approach every exam as more than a cleaning appointment. We are looking at the full picture of your oral health because the two are inseparable.

Oral cancer screenings fit naturally into our philosophy of conservative, thorough care. We are not interested in ordering unnecessary procedures or alarming patients unnecessarily. What we are committed to is making sure that if something needs attention, we find it while the window for the most straightforward treatment is still open. At a family dentistry practice like ours, that kind of attentiveness is something we offer to patients of every age.
